Position Purpose
The selected employee shall lead the technical aspects of the project development and support the SPV team during the project execution and operation. The projects will mainly renewable power: solar, wind and battery energy storage systems and are being developed on Southern Africa.
Responsibilities

Business Origination

Support the business development team to facilitate the initial evaluation of the opportunities:

  • Conduct site screening exercises using satellite sources (wind and solar resource, topographical conditions, etc.) as well as site visits.
  • Preliminary technical assessments, using in-house Excel tools which should be further developed and improved with time.
  • Identify the key risks and opportunities of the project.
  • Preparing initial presentations and proposals of the opportunity.

Project Development

Being the bulk of the responsibilities, this scope includes the development activities until Financing Close:

  • Site screening and preliminary evaluation.
  • Ability to evaluate grid conditions and to develop a technical feasible solution for the project.
  • Understanding of single line diagrams (SLDs) of HV infrastructure in order to identify the existing grid infrastructure and the different alternatives for connecting the grid to the project.
  • RFP development and contracting all the site and grid–based studies.
  • Perform energy yield analyses (EYAs) and review EYAs by other parties.
  • Review the site and grid study reports from consultants and provide feedback.
  • Evaluate and optimise technology and layout options for future projects.
  • Highlight grid connection and off–taker requirements for future projects.
  • Lead the write–up of the Employer’s Requirements for the EPC to align with – with a strong focus on cost–effectiveness and constructability.
  • Write–up of minimum specifications for key equipment (Inverter, Module, Tracker / substructure, BESS, PPC, SCADA, substation equipment)
  • Liaise and coordinate with Lenders’ Technical Advisor (LTA) and support in all technical matters on behalf of the organisation and, in some cases, the EPC.
  • Review and approve manufacturer/ subcontractor/ vendor techno–commercial offer.
  • Support the Solar Technical Manager and other parties in the technical team in achieving AMEA’s annual and long term strategic renewable energy business plan.
  • Support with project agreements like PPA, EPC and O&M and their typical technical schedules
  • Specify the Owner’s Engineer (OE) role to help with the development of their RFPs and Contracts – while assuming more responsibility to reduce the organisation’s reliance on an OE for technical support.
  • Perform technical due diligence assessments on potential projects.

Engineering Phase

  • Evaluate and optimize solar and storage technology and associated balance of system components most suitable for the project.
  • Evaluate and optimize the plant layout for better EYA and plant maintainability.
  • Ensure that the plant meets all grid code requirements for the region or complies with any best industry practice for grid support.
  • Coordinate with the owner’s engineer the approval of the engineering deliverables of the EPC Contractor.
  • In close coordination with the owner’s engineer, liaise with the public authorities (grid operator, environmental authorities, local authorities, etc.) to obtain all the necessary permits and approvals for the project.
  • Support the owner’s engineer to attend all the requests of the lender’s technical advisor.
  • Coordinate with the project team any topic raised by the EPC Contractor (claims, variations, etc.).
  • Detail design review support

Procurement Phase

  • Support the owner’s engineer the approval of the purchase orders technical specifications, ensuring that it complies with all the requirements defined under the EPC Contract.
  • Review the offers from key component supplier and preparing comparative statement.
  • Review with the legal team the technical guarantees provided by the equipment suppliers proposed by the EPC Contractor, to ensure it is aligned with the requirements of the EPC Contract.
  • Assist the project team with any technical issue related to the logistics and import of products.

Construction Phase

  • Coordinate with execution team during structuring, execution and commissioning stages of the projects.
  • Support the project team with technical queries during the construction phase.
  • In coordination with the project team, support the EPC Contractor and equipment suppliers to ensure the correct installation of the key equipment.
  • Monitor the commissioning and performance tests, auditing the results provided by the EPC Contractor.
  • Provide support to the project team in their discussions with the lender technical advisor during the provisional acceptance of the project.

Qualifications & Experience

The employee must have the following qualifications & experience:

  • Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering (or Mechatronics ).
  • Masters in renewable energy will be an advantage

The employee must have the following skills:

  • Solar PV resource and yield assessment(PVsyst, SolarGIS) – Expert.
  • BESS energy yield assessment (Homer and/or Excel and/or Matlab and/or other calculation tools) – Intermediate to Expert.
  • Solar PV conceptual design (Layouts, SLDs, SCADA) – Expert.
  • Understanding of grid codes, grid connection requirements and plant control philosophy – Expert.
  • Grid study review – Expert.
  • Excel (including macro programming) – Expert.
  • Solar PV and BESS project technical development best practices and standards – Expert.
  • Detail design review – Expert.
  • Battery storage technology –Intermediate to Expert.
  • Other programming / calculation tools – Intermediate.
  • AutoCAD or CAD design – Intermediate.
  • Technical software for GIS (Google Earth or QGIS) – Intermediate.
  • Project management software (MS Project or Primavera) – Basic.
  • CFD software (for evaluating trackers) – Basic.
  • French, or Portuguese speaking is a plus.
